1. Green Credit Programme Advances Tree
Planting Efforts Across India:
Madhya Pradesh
leads the Central Government's Green Credit Programme (GCP), with over 500
plots of land cleared for tree planting in the last two months across 10
states. These states have allocated 10,000 hectares of land for the project,
prioritizing damaged forest areas for reforestation. Madhya Pradesh, Telangana,
Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, and Assam are among the states leading in land
allocation for this initiative, with other states like Odisha, Bihar,
Rajasthan, and Tamil Nadu also contributing.
2. India Anticipates Above-average Rainfall
in 2024 Monsoon Season:
The India
Meteorological Department forecasts above-average rainfall during the 2024
monsoon season, with La Nina conditions expected to develop by August or
September. This prediction is based on historical data indicating increased
rainfall during La Nina events following El Nino periods. With 2023
experiencing El Nino, resulting in weaker monsoon winds and dry weather, India
is hopeful for a rebound in rainfall this year.
3. Indian Air Force Strengthens Security
Measures at Additional Air Bases:
The Indian Air
Force (IAF) is enhancing security at 30 additional air bases nationwide with a
sophisticated surveillance and intrusion detection system. Building upon the
Integrated Perimeter Security System (IPSS) already operational at 23 crucial
air bases, this multi-layered approach aims to bolster defense capabilities and
safeguard critical infrastructure.
4. Successful Testing of Man-Portable
Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) Weapon System:
The Defence
Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Army have conducted
successful testing of the Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile (MPATGM) Weapon
System at PFFR in Rajasthan. Developed autonomously by DRDO, the MPATGM Weapon
System includes the missile, portable launcher, target acquisition system
(TAS), and fire control unit (FCU), enhancing India's defense capabilities.
5. Manipur Reports Significant Reduction in
Opium Poppy Cultivation:
Manipur Chief
Minister N Biren Singh announced a notable victory in the state's fight against
opium poppy cultivation, with a 60% reduction in cultivation area between 2021
and 2024. A study by the Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC)
highlights the success of concerted efforts to combat illicit cultivation and
promote alternative livelihoods.
6. Asian Development Bank Updates India's
GDP Growth Forecast:
The Asian
Development Bank (ADB) revised India's GDP growth forecast for fiscal years
2024 and 2025 in its April 2024 Asia Development prognosis Report. The
optimistic outlook reflects various factors contributing to India's economic
resilience and growth trajectory.
