1. Siachen Day Commemorates Indian Army's Bravery at High Altitudes:

April 13 marks Siachen Day, a solemn occasion to honor the courage and sacrifice of the Indian Army soldiers who fought at the Siachen Glacier, the world's highest battlefield. This day commemorates the start of "Operation Meghdoot" in 1984, aimed at safeguarding the glacier strategically located near the Line of Control between India and Pakistan.

 

2. Historic Order Placed for LCA Mark 1A Fighter Planes:

In a landmark move, the Indian government has placed an order worth Rs 65,000 crore for 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter planes from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). This purchase, the largest ever of domestic military equipment, signifies a significant shift towards indigenization in the defense sector. The upgraded Tejas aircraft will replace the outdated MiG fleet, enhancing the Indian Air Force's operational capabilities and supporting the growth of small and medium defense companies.

4. South Korea's Legislative Elections:

South Korea recently conducted legislative elections to elect all 300 members of the National Assembly. The primary opposition Democratic Party secured a significant victory with its affiliated party, winning a total of 175 seats. This outcome represents a setback for President Yoon Suk Yeol and his conservative People Power Party, which secured only 108 seats.

 

5. Blue Origin Includes Indian Citizen in Next New Shepard Expedition:

Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, has announced the inclusion of Gopichand Thotakura, an Indian citizen, in a six-person team for the upcoming New Shepard expedition. If successful, Thotakura will become the second Indian citizen to venture into space after wing commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984, and the first Indian civilian astronaut.

 

6. RBI Proposes Integration of PPIs with UPI Applications:

To address user concerns, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed allowing the integration of Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs) with third-party developed UPI applications. This move aims to enhance the accessibility and usability of wallet funds, facilitating seamless transactions and promoting digital payments across various platforms.
